Ukrainian soldiers, who steadfastly defended Mariupol and left Azovstal in accordance with the order, have been in captivity for two years. On the night of July 28-29, 2022, Russia committed a mass murder in Olenivka, blowing up the barracks where the Azov soldiers had been transferred. The tragedy led to the death of more than 50 soldiers.
Approximately 700 Azov fighters remain in Russian captivity. Contact with them is complicated by the inability to learn about their condition through international organizations, including the Red Cross.
Ukrainian authorities maintain contact with the families of prisoners, but efforts are aimed primarily at supporting ideas and projects, rather than obtaining specific information about their well-being in captivity.
The investigation into the Olenivka terrorist attack remains confidential, with limited information available. The Ukrainian investigation is ongoing, but the international investigation appears not to have begun. Preparations for submitting the case to the International Criminal Court are ongoing, but this is a time-consuming and difficult process.
The public organization “Community of Families of Olenivka” initiates actions in support of prisoners in 11 countries around the world. Their actions commemorate the memory of those who died in Olenivka and support all Ukrainian prisoners.
Creative and cultural projects are also being used to support the POWs. Kreatyvna Sich collaborates with NGOs, developing materials and works to commemorate the tragedy and support the POWs.
Participating in public actions, supporting initiatives, and spreading information about the situation of prisoners of war are ways that everyone can help families and military personnel in captivity.
