Former Minister of Economic Development and Trade of Ukraine Pavlo Sheremeta announced his mobilization to the Defense Forces of Ukraine. He wrote about this on his Facebook page.
"I made this decision consciously. I will not disclose the details yet, but yes, I am mobilized and will serve in the National Guard," Sheremeta noted.
The well-known economist, reformer, and public intellectual joined the defense of the state in the conditions of a full-scale war. In his post, he did not specify in which unit he would serve.
What is known about Pavel Sheremet?
Pavlo Sheremeta headed the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade of Ukraine in February 2014, after the Revolution of Dignity, in the government of Arseniy Yatsenyuk. Before that, he was a well-known specialist in the field of business education and reforms: he founded the Kyiv-Mohyla Business School, was the dean of the Lviv Business School, and worked on international projects.
However, in September 2014, Sheremet resigned due to disagreement with the principles of the government's personnel policy. In particular, he opposed the appointment of Valeriy Pyatnytskyi to the position of deputy minister without his consent. He publicly explained his position by his reluctance to return to the "old approaches" and the lack of systemic support for reforms.
After his release, Sheremet returned to teaching, consulting, and promoting ideas for economic modernization. His public speeches often focused on Ukraine's strategic development, institutional capacity, and innovation.
Now, in 2025, he has joined the defenders of Ukraine no longer as an expert, but as a soldier. His decision to serve in the National Guard was an unexpected but symbolic gesture from a man who has repeatedly called for accountability, transparency, and action.
