The energy situation in Ukraine remains complex, and the risk of power outages in the winter will depend on several key factors. In an interview with UNIAN, energy expert Gennady Ryabtsev explained which aspects will influence the duration and scale of possible restrictions.
1. Consequences of Russian missile strikes
Rocket attacks leave the biggest mark on the power system. According to Ryabtsev, repairing the damage can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, depending on the extent of the damage. For example, after the attack on August 26, the power system took 13 days to restore, and this period was accompanied by widespread outages.
2. Air temperature
Winter cold also seriously affects the stability of the power supply. If the temperature drops below -5°C, the probability of hourly outages increases significantly, the expert notes. Lower temperatures increase electricity consumption for heating, creating an additional load on the system.
3. Weather phenomena
Blizzards, blizzards, strong winds, and sleet can cause power lines to freeze and equipment to fail, leading to emergencies that require urgent intervention.
4. Worn out equipment
Ukraine's energy infrastructure remains vulnerable due to aging equipment. Its wear and tear increases the risk of breakdowns at power plants, which can reduce available energy generation.
Winter outlook
According to Ryabtsev, taking into account all the above factors, the situation this winter may be similar to last season. He called for avoiding panic and working on mitigating risks. At the same time, the expert stressed the importance of responding promptly to any threats and citizens' preparedness for possible disruptions.
What should citizens do?
Experts advise preparing for winter: having alternative sources of light and heat at home, planning energy consumption taking into account possible outage schedules, and staying calm in difficult situations.
