Ukraine's future depends on birth rates and refugee returns

After the war, Ukraine will face a number of challenges, among which one of the most dangerous threats is the demographic crisis. According to Oleksandr Gladun, Deputy Director for Scientific Work of the Institute of Demography and Quality of Life Problems of the NAS of Ukraine, low birth rate is the most serious problem for the future of Ukraine.

For stable population growth, every 100 women should give birth to 210-220 children. This figure is high even for European countries, where the demographic situation is also not ideal. In Ukraine, this level remains unattainable. Gladun notes that if it is possible to raise the birth rate to 160-180 children per 100 women, this will already be a positive signal for the country. However, even with such indicators, the population will still decline, although not as rapidly as today.

Another important factor that can help solve the demographic crisis is the increase in life expectancy. This requires every citizen to maintain a healthy lifestyle, as well as an effective health care system. The increase in life expectancy can make a significant contribution to slowing down the population decline.

Gladun also emphasizes that much of Ukraine's demographic situation depends on how many Ukrainians return to the country after the war. There are currently over 6 million citizens abroad who left because of the war. If at least half of them return, it will be a huge boost to the country's recovery. However, the exact number of those who decide to return is currently difficult to predict, which creates another uncertainty for the future.

Ukraine's black demographic statistics

The situation in Ukraine is already extremely critical. According to the latest data, the country has come first in the world in terms of mortality and last in terms of birth rate. This indicates an urgent need to develop state programs aimed at stimulating the birth rate, improving conditions for young families, and ensuring social guarantees.
