The situation around the frontline town of Chasiv Yar in the Donetsk region is described as “complicated and tense,” according to a statement by Oleg Kalashnikov, a spokesman for the 26th Artillery Brigade located in the area.
“The situation is quite complicated and tense. The Russians are trying to storm the small settlements of Bogdanivka and Ivanovske, which are outside Chasiv Yar,” Kalashnikov said in an interview on a national telethon. He added that between these settlements, Russian forces are trying to advance using infantry supported by armored combat vehicles, as well as combat aircraft.
“However, all their attacks have been repelled, they are retreating,” the spokesman stressed. He stressed the strategic importance of Chasiv Yar, located 20 kilometers west of Bakhmut, which was occupied by Russia in May 2023. If Russia captures Chasiv Yar, where only 770 people remain out of a pre-war population of 13,000, it will be able to shell the city of Konstantinovka, Kalashnikov warned.
"The enemy will also be able to threaten logistical routes between Kostyantynivka, Sloviansk, and Kramatorsk," he noted, adding that the latter two points could also come under direct attack.
Chasiv Yar is located less than 30 kilometers southeast of Kramatorsk, which is an important railway and logistics hub for the Ukrainian army. It is noted that Russian propaganda media reported that Russian troops had approached the outskirts of Chasiv Yar.
Meanwhile, General Oleksandr Syrsky, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, declared that the city was under the control of the Ukrainian army. He acknowledged that Russian troops were trying to break through the defenses, but stressed that these efforts were unsuccessful.
