German defense concern Rheinmetall has received a key order from the Ukrainian government to build an ammunition production plant in Ukraine.
This news, which became known through the company's official website, was an important step in expanding Ukraine's defense capabilities.
According to Rheinmetall, the company has received its first major order for the construction of the plant, which was announced in February 2024. The order includes the complete technical equipment of the plant until its commissioning. The project is estimated to cost in the three-digit million euro range, and construction is due to start soon, with completion planned within a few years.
Rheinmetall intends to build at least four factories in Ukraine, which will contribute to the development of the national defense industry. The company also intends to start ammunition production in Ukraine within 24 months. Together with a Ukrainian partner with whom it has established a joint venture, Rheinmetall will be responsible for the operation of the new factory.
Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger emphasized that this project is a confirmation of trust in the company's expertise and production capabilities. "We are putting our words into action, and together with our partner we will create a Ukrainian ammunition center," Papperger noted.
This contract is not the only example of international investment in the Ukrainian defense industry. Earlier it became known that the American company Northrop Grumman plans to launch the production of medium-caliber ammunition in Ukraine. Also, the French-German conglomerate KNDS announced the creation of an enterprise in Ukraine that will be engaged in the production of military equipment and ammunition. The French defense group Thales has also signed several agreements with Ukraine, including the creation of a joint venture in cooperation with Ukroboronprom and FRDM.
