Stair test for the heart: how to check endurance at home

Cardiologists offer simple methods for preliminary assessment of the state of the cardiovascular system, which do not require special equipment. All that is needed is a regular staircase in a high-rise building and a few minutes of time. Such tests do not replace medical diagnostics, but they can help to notice alarming signals in time.

First way: climb to the fourth floor

After a light warm-up, you should walk up to the fourth floor at a comfortable pace. Immediately after the ascent, you should measure your pulse. Normally, your heart rate should be less than 140 beats per minute.

If the indicator exceeds this limit or you experience shortness of breath, dizziness or chest discomfort, this is a reason to consult a doctor for advice. An increased pulse may indicate low physical endurance or hidden heart problems.

Second method: 4-minute endurance test

A more intense option involves climbing from the first to the 11th or 12th floor in four minutes. The pace should be even: do not run or jump over the steps to avoid sudden overload.

A healthy person around 40 years old with no serious chronic conditions can usually complete this task in a given time. If the lift takes significantly longer or if chest pain occurs, this may indicate reduced heart muscle function.

Experts emphasize: the inability to overcome 12 floors in 4 minutes may be a sign of a serious decrease in cardiac endurance.

Risk factors that are often forgotten

Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death in the world. According to American cardiologist Roy Siegelstein , the danger is not only a poor diet, a sedentary lifestyle or high cholesterol.

Emotional stress, social isolation, and depression also increase the risk of heart disease. Chronic loneliness can negatively affect blood pressure, hormonal balance, and heart function. That's why doctors advise maintaining active social contacts and paying attention to your psycho-emotional state.

When to see a doctor

Stair tests can be useful for self-assessment, but they are not a substitute for professional examination. Immediate consultation with a cardiologist is required if during physical exertion you experience:

chest pain or pressure;
shortness of breath;
dizziness or blurred vision;
irregular heart rhythm.

Regular physical activity, blood pressure control, a balanced diet, and stress reduction remain the cornerstones of cardiovascular disease prevention.
