The Center for Strategic Communications has published recommendations on the safe use of alternative sources of light and heat, the Kyiv City State Administration reports. The tips are designed to help Ukrainian families prepare for possible emergencies and reduce the risks of fires and accidents.
Experts advise to have a fire extinguisher at home. In apartment buildings, it should be placed in the entrances, preferably on each floor or at least on the upper floors, and also check whether the emergency exits are blocked. If possible, it is recommended to install a fire alarm, especially in the kitchen and in rooms with increased fire risk. Children should be reminded of safety rules and not allowed to use electrical appliances or open fire without supervision.
During a power outage, it is advisable to unplug all appliances from the outlets to avoid damage due to voltage surges, and if possible, install a stabilizer.
Regarding gas burners, experts advise to buy only certified devices and cylinders from licensed points of sale and to strictly follow the manufacturer's instructions. Before use, the integrity of the cylinder should be checked using a soap solution. Burners can only be used in rooms with ventilation, and gas cylinders should be kept away from the sun and high temperatures. Burners should not be installed on electric stoves or other heating devices.
Candles should be kept a safe distance from clothing, curtains, books and other flammable objects, not left unattended or used while sleeping. It is important not to burn a candle to the end and to limit access to it by children and pets.
When using stove heating, it is advisable to regularly maintain the stove, clean the chimneys during the heating season, and check for cracks in the walls of stoves and chimneys. Do not use flammable liquids for ignition and do not leave the stove unattended, especially when there are children at home.
Following these simple rules will help keep heat and light in your home without endangering your health and life.
