How to avoid poisoning and fires when operating a generator

During power outages, generators remain an important source of power for households and businesses. However, failure to follow the rules for operating this equipment can lead to electric shock, fires, or fatal carbon monoxide poisoning, according to experts from the State Emergency Service.

Rescuers emphasize that generators are allowed to be used only outdoors. The distance to windows, doors and ventilation holes must be at least six meters. It is strictly forbidden to turn on generators indoors, on balconies or in basements, as during operation they emit carbon monoxide, which has no odor and can quickly lead to death.

The equipment must be protected from rain, snow and high humidity. Contact with a wet generator can cause electric shock. Experts also advise not to overload the equipment and periodically turn it off to cool down, in particular, take breaks of at least half an hour after several hours of continuous operation. Special attention should be paid to restricting access of children and animals to the working unit.

A particularly dangerous stage of operation is refueling the generator. It is forbidden to fill fuel into a running or still hot engine. Before refueling, it is necessary to wait for the equipment to cool completely to avoid ignition or explosion.

Safe storage of fuel is also of fundamental importance. For gasoline in the cold season, it is recommended to use polymer canisters made of high-density polyethylene, which do not accumulate static charge and have appropriate markings. In the warm season, the use of both plastic and metal canisters is allowed. Diesel fuel can be stored in both types of containers regardless of the season.

Fuel should be stored in a dark, dry place at a temperature of about 15–20 degrees, away from direct sunlight. Using expired or discolored fuel can damage the engine. Such fuel should be disposed of or used exclusively for technical purposes. Experts also warn against independently adding so-called “additives” to diesel to increase frost resistance, as this can cause serious damage.

Separately, rescuers advise installing carbon monoxide detectors in residential premises. These devices are able to warn in time about danger that cannot be felt without special equipment.

In addition, Ukrainians are urged to purchase only certified generators at official points of sale and to strictly follow the manufacturer's instructions during operation.
