How to recognize a myocardial infarction and save a life

Myocardial infarction is a dangerous condition that occurs due to a sudden disruption of the blood supply to the heart muscle. It can lead to serious consequences or even death if medical care is not provided in time. That is why it is extremely important to know its main symptoms and the algorithm of actions in case of suspected infarction.

According to the Kyiv City State Administration, the characteristic signs of a heart attack are:

  • sharp chest pain;

  • difficulty breathing and feeling short of breath;

  • nausea, vomiting, indigestion, heartburn or stomach pain;

  • weakness, profuse sweating, feeling anxious;

  • pain or discomfort spreading to the jaw, teeth, neck, shoulders, arms, or upper abdomen;

  • irregular heartbeat.

Risk factors also play a key role. The most common risk factors for heart attack are: age (after 45 years in men and 55 years in women), heredity, high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, obesity, stress, a sedentary lifestyle, bad habits, and poor nutrition.

If symptoms of a heart attack appear, you should:

  1. Call emergency medical services immediately.

  2. Place the person on their back with their head slightly elevated.

  3. Provide access to fresh air.

  4. Do not leave the patient unattended.

  5. Do not give any medication without the advice of the ambulance dispatcher.

Early recognition of symptoms and taking the right actions before medical help arrives can save lives.
