Stomach rumbling is a normal part of the digestive system. However, sometimes it becomes so loud and frequent that it becomes uncomfortable, especially in the presence of other people. In such cases, it is worth understanding what causes it and how you can reduce the unpleasant sounds.
Why does my stomach growl?
The most common cause is hunger. An empty stomach and intestines contract in preparation for food intake, which creates the characteristic sound.
Another factor is dysbiosis, where the balance of beneficial bacteria in the gut is disrupted. This can happen due to antibiotics, poor diet, or stress.
Overeating also provokes rumbling: excess food overloads the digestive system, and peristalsis is disrupted.
Grunting can be related to food allergies, when certain foods irritate the intestines.
Another reason is rushing while eating. Air is swallowed along with food, which causes flatulence and stomach rumbling.
Factors that exacerbate the problem include heavy and fatty foods, carbonated drinks, alcohol, and excess caffeine.
What to do
To reduce burping, you can drink a few sips of water, have a light snack with foods that do not cause gas, or add probiotics to your diet — yogurt, sauerkraut, cheese.
It is worth reviewing your diet: more fiber and protein, less fast food and sugar. Herbal teas with mint, ginger or fennel will help.
Eat slowly to reduce air swallowing, and avoid stress — it negatively affects digestion.
Additionally, quitting smoking, wearing loose clothing, and taking care of your oral health can also help.
If the rumbling is accompanied by pain, bloating, or other symptoms, you should see a doctor.
