How to lower “bad” cholesterol without medication

High cholesterol is a serious risk factor for heart disease. When too much low-density lipoprotein (LDL, or “bad” cholesterol) builds up in the body, it can lead to the formation of atherosclerotic plaques that block arteries and cause heart attacks and strokes. However, it is possible to change the situation without medication – with the help of a healthy diet.

One of the most effective ways to lower your “bad” cholesterol levels is to include foods rich in glucoraphanin in your diet. This is a chemical compound found primarily in broccoli, cauliflower, and sprouted grains.

According to experts, glucoraphanin, once in the body, is converted into sulforaphane, a substance that helps regulate metabolism and inhibits cholesterol synthesis. Studies have shown that eating broccoli regularly can reduce LDL levels by 16–19%, and the risk of developing heart disease is even greater.

Useful substances are better preserved when steamed — this is the heat treatment that scientists recommend for vegetables rich in glucoraphanin.

Another food that has been shown to be effective in lowering cholesterol is avocado. According to research, eating one avocado daily for six months helps significantly reduce the level of “bad” cholesterol in the blood.

In addition to lowering cholesterol, sulforaphane also has antioxidant effects and cancer-preventing potential, making plant foods high in glucoraphanin not only heart-healthy but also important for overall wellness.
