How the new EU border crossing system will work: what will change for Ukrainians from October 12

From October 12, entry into the European Union will be carried out according to new rules - the EES (Entry/Exit System) system comes into effect. This means that the usual stamps in the passport will gradually become a thing of the past: instead of a stamp, border guards will record the traveler's biometric data in a single database. At the border of the Schengen zone, you may be asked to provide fingerprints, a facial photograph and a scan of your passport; these data will be stored in the system and processed to control the flow of people entering the EU.

The European Parliament positions the EES as a tool for improving security and combating illegal migration more effectively: after the system is implemented, border guards and law enforcement agencies will be able to more quickly check entry and exit history, detect forged documents and monitor the duration of stay. According to official reports, by March next year, the new procedure will completely replace traditional stamps in passports.

In parallel, another innovation is being prepared - ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System). Unlike the EES, ETIAS is not a biometric database at the border, but an electronic travel permit that must be issued in advance: it will be valid for several years and will cost several euros. The system is designed to pre-screen travelers from countries that use the visa-free regime and should serve as an additional security filter. The official launch of ETIAS is expected later, but it is worth preparing for it now.

Important news for Ukrainians is that the changes do not affect persons with official temporary protection status: such citizens must present a document confirming their status when crossing the border and do not go through ETIAS. At the same time, all other travelers should be prepared for the fact that from October 12, they may be asked to undergo a biometrics recording procedure at the border, and soon - to issue an electronic permit for travel to the EU.

Practical advice for those planning a trip: before traveling, check the validity of your passport and, if necessary, prepare electronic services through which you can apply for ETIAS in the future. It is also worth following official messages from consulates and border services - they will provide precise instructions on the procedures in your specific case. The new rules are aimed at increasing security, but may temporarily complicate border crossing due to additional steps during control.
