Against the background of the urgent need to ensure energy security and modernization of existing nuclear power plants, Energoatom in Ukraine is actively lobbying for the construction of new units at the Khmelnytskyi Nuclear Power Plant (NPP). The draft law, which provides for the construction of blocks #3-4 of the Khmelnytsky NPP, received support from the specialized energy committee of the Verkhovna Rada.
"Energoatom" and Shmyhal's government do not want to be responsible for the fantastic ideas of building NPP units worth billions of dollars. And they transfer it to the Verkhovna Rada. Well, the main point is the allocation of money from the budget for construction. If people's deputies vote on the draft law, they will give the government the opportunity to allocate money for NPP units.
Skeptics point out that the grandiose plans for the construction of four units at the Khmelnytskyi NPP and two more at the South Ukrainian NPP are a waste of money and effort during the war and when it is necessary to rebuild the destroyed TPPs, CHPs and HPPs.
An old and incomplete Russian NPP unit VVER-1000 from Bulgaria and the same old semi-disassembled Westinghouse AP1000 unit from the USA. This is all they can offer us. And if Ukraine spends a lot of money on the purchase of this "equipment", then it will be necessary to spend ten times more, not hryvnias, but dollars, to bring all this "equipment" to its senses.
It is natural that Energoatom and the government cover themselves with good intentions - to increase the annual production of electricity by 16.2 billion kWh, to add 2.2 GW to the power system in order to compensate for the loss of energy capacities due to the war.
