A terrible accident occurred in the village of Verkhnyachka, Uman district, Cherkasy region: a 49-year-old female driver of a Volkswagen Golf hit a 22-year-old woman who was crossing the road with her one-year-old son in a stroller. The mother died on the spot, but the child, fortunately, was not injured.
This was reported by the Cherkasy region police on February 13. The tragedy occurred the day before, at around 5:00 p.m.
According to preliminary information, the driver lost control, which led to the collision. She was detained under Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine. Currently, the prosecutor's office is deciding on the issue of declaring suspicion and choosing a preventive measure.
Investigators have opened criminal proceedings under Part 2 of Article 286 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine - violation of traffic rules, which caused the death of the victim. If proven guilty, the woman faces up to eight years in prison.
According to the Patrol Police, in 2024, 25,781 road accidents with fatalities or injuries occurred in the territory controlled by Ukraine. As a result of these accidents, 3,202 people died, and more than 32,000 were injured.
This tragedy once again reminds us of the importance of following traffic rules and the need to be careful while driving.
