A court in Cherkasy found a local resident guilty of high treason and sabotage of critical infrastructure. The man was sentenced to 15 years in prison with confiscation of property for carrying out tasks for Russian special services.
As reported by the Cherkasy Regional Prosecutor's Office, this is a 49-year-old resident of the region who agreed to cooperate with representatives of the Russian Federation in early March 2025. He received the task via the Telegram messenger.
According to the investigation, the man was instructed to set fire to railway infrastructure facilities that are of strategic importance to the economy and defense of Ukraine. Before carrying out the task, he prepared himself - he purchased fire-starting materials at a gas station and chose a target.
In Cherkasy, an attacker set fire to the relay cabinets and battery cabinet of an entrance traffic light at one of the railway facilities. Such actions could have caused serious disruptions in transport operations and created a threat to traffic safety.
After committing the sabotage, the man tried to hide, but law enforcement officers quickly located him and detained him in Kherson. He was held in custody during the pre-trial investigation.
The court found him guilty under several articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, including high treason and sabotage committed under martial law. The sentence includes 15 years in prison with confiscation of property.
Law enforcement agencies emphasize that such crimes belong to the category of especially serious. Collaboration with the enemy during war is considered one of the most serious crimes and carries severe punishment.
