On the air of the TV channel "Novyny.Live", a lecturer at the B. Grinchenko Kyiv University, Kateryna Nykonyuk, expressed her position on the need for a legislative ban on Russian-language content in Ukraine during the martial law period.
According to her, there is a worrying trend in the media space - a return to Russian-language content. This, in her opinion, is a worrying signal at a time when Ukraine is at war with Russia.
"When you are a leader of public opinion, making money from your audience, you have to be careful about what you say. Celebrities are starting to say that their jaws are not tuned to the Ukrainian language, even though they have lived their lives in Ukraine," noted Nykonyuk.
She also emphasized that many Ukrainian stars since Soviet times studied Ukrainian in school, read classics, and were in a Ukrainian-speaking environment. Therefore, she believes that intensifying the language discussion now is an attempt to stir up society at a time when the country needs unity.
According to the teacher, the decision to ban Russian-language content should be temporary and only valid for the duration of martial law. At the same time, she emphasized that this issue should be resolved not only through bans, but also through systematic work - in particular, by the Ministry of Culture and the Language Ombudsman.
"This should not take the form of bans, but rather as a way to popularize the Ukrainian language," added Nykonyuk.
Recall that in 2024–2025, several public figures, including musicians and bloggers, caused public outrage by refusing to speak Ukrainian even in public. This once again brought the language issue to the forefront and led to new discussions about the legislative regulation of content during wartime.
