For the first time since the war in Ukraine, a majority of Poles have spoken out in favor of ending the conflict, even if it involves territorial concessions from Ukraine. This data was published by Polish Radio, citing the results of a survey conducted by the Polish Center for Public Opinion Research (CBOS).
In particular, the survey showed that 55% of respondents supported the idea that Ukraine should sacrifice territory to end the war. In September 2024, only 39% of respondents supported this, and in April, only 26%.
In turn, CBOS emphasized that this change shows growing fatigue from the long-term war, as previously Polish citizens supported Ukraine continuing its struggle.
The survey also showed that young people in Poland, namely people aged 18 to 24, residents of smaller cities, people with lower levels of education, and Poles with more conservative views, mostly support peace through negotiations.
Meanwhile, Ukrainians think differently. A survey by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) showed that almost two-thirds of Ukrainians are ready to endure war “as long as it takes.” This figure has slightly decreased from 73% in late 2023 to 63% in October 2024, but the majority still strongly rejects territorial concessions.
Possibility of negotiations with Russia – latest news
Earlier, Advisor to the Head of the Presidential Office Mykhailo Podolyak stated that negotiations between Ukraine and Russia are currently impossible. According to him, the Russian Federation can only sit at the negotiating table through instruments of coercion.
Andriy Yermak, the head of the Presidential Office, also stressed that peace talks will only begin when the Russian Federation does not have the resources to wage war. He noted that because of this, “an incredibly large amount of work lies ahead.”.
