An earthquake occurred in Chernivtsi region, the Main Center for Special Control reports.
Earthquake tremors were recorded in the Dniester district of Bukovina. According to experts, the earthquake had a magnitude of 1.4 on the Richter scale and occurred at a depth of about 3 kilometers.
"According to the classification of earthquakes, this one is considered imperceptible," the Center noted, emphasizing that the vibrations do not pose a threat to the population.
This is the second earthquake in the Chernivtsi region in recent weeks. The previous one occurred on October 16 near Novodniestrovsk, when the magnitude reached 2.1 points.
Seismic activity in Ukraine
According to Dmytro Hryn, a leading researcher at the S. I. Subbotin Institute of Geophysics of the NAS of Ukraine, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, seismic activity in Ukraine is not an exceptional phenomenon.
The Vrancea zone, located in Romania, has the greatest impact on the country, but earthquakes are also recorded in other regions. In particular, earthquakes of magnitude 3–4 occur from time to time in the Black Sea, and the Carpathians are also seismically hazardous areas.
In addition, modern instruments detect some seismic activity within the Ukrainian Crystalline Shield - in the Poltava region and in the Kryvyi Rih area. Previously, these zones were considered relatively calm, but now underground vibrations of up to 4–4.5 magnitude have been recorded.
Experts emphasize that even minor tremors are a reminder of the need to improve monitoring systems and preparedness for possible natural disasters.
