In the Transcarpathian region, border guards detained a man who was trying to illegally cross the state border with Romania across the Tisza River. He was stopped just a few meters from the border line.
According to the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, the detainee turned out to be a local resident who was wanted. Law enforcement officers suspected him of committing serious criminal offenses, including sexual violence and rape.
According to the investigation, the man decided to flee on the day of the scheduled court hearing in his case. He probably hoped to avoid responsibility by crossing the border outside the checkpoints.
However, the escape attempt failed. Border guards promptly detained him on the banks of the Tisza River and handed him over to the police.
After that, the court hearing took place without delay. As a result of the case, the man was found guilty and sentenced to 15 years in prison.
The State Border Service of Ukraine emphasizes that the service units continue to exercise increased control over the border zone in order to prevent illegal border crossings and detain persons who are trying to evade legal responsibility.
