The Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights, Dmytro Lubinets, reported that almost 37,000 people have actually disappeared in Ukraine. This category includes children, civilians, and military personnel, but, according to Lubinets, the real number could be much higher.
It is noted that among these individuals, about 1,700 have been verified by Ukraine and the International Committee of the Red Cross and through other means as being illegally detained by Russia.
The exact number of missing persons is difficult to establish due to the fact that Russian troops still control part of the country's territory, as well as the lack of regular publication of data on losses by the parties to the conflict.
The UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine has confirmed the deaths of 10,810 civilians and the injury of 20,556 as of March 2024 as a result of Russia's two-year invasion of Ukraine. However, the organization believes that the real number of civilian casualties could be much higher.
