Ukrainian law enforcement officials announced on May 17 the detention of businessman Vitaliy Kropachov, who owns assets in the coal, gas, energy, and media sectors. This information was confirmed by the State Bureau of Investigation.
Representatives of the State Bureau of Investigation confirmed the fact of the detention, adding that further investigative actions are ongoing. The reasons for the detention have not yet been disclosed, but law enforcement officials promise to provide more information later.
Vitaliy Kropachev is the owner of Ukrdoninvest, a coal and gas mining company. In recent years, he has been actively expanding his business interests, buying up companies in various industries, including engineering, construction, and transportation. In addition, he has also acquired media assets, including TV channels and a digital multiplex operator.
Previously, law enforcement officers had already investigated his involvement in a scheme related to the control of state procurement in the coal industry, which led to losses for the state budget. The investigation noted overpayments for equipment in the amount of more than 51 million hryvnias.
It is also worth noting that the State Property Fund of Ukraine announced its intention to privatize a number of facilities, including the Bilhorod-Dniester port. Previous attempts to hold auctions failed due to the lack of interested participants.
