In 2024, Ukraine will see a significant decrease in the number of new marriages and an increase in divorces, as well as an increase in the popularity of marriage contracts. This follows from data published by the Opendatabot platform.
Decreasing the Number of Marriages
According to the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine, 72,766 new marriages were concluded during the first six months of 2024. This is 15% less than in the same period last year, and a third less than before the start of the major war in 2022. Interestingly, after a significant wedding boom in the first year of the full-scale invasion, the number of marriages gradually decreased, and this year it became the lowest since the beginning of the war.
More Marriage Contracts
Despite the decline in the number of marriages, Ukrainians have become more aware of the legal regulation of their relationships. In 2024, 3,768 marriage contracts were concluded, which is 25% more than in the corresponding period last year. This trend indicates the growing popularity of legal protection of personal and financial interests in marriage.
The Ukrainian capital remains the leader in the number of new marriages, with 9,392 new families registered in Kyiv. Dnipropetrovsk region is in second place with 7,076 marriages, and Odessa region closes the top three with 4,896 new families.
The Rise of Divorces
Amid the decline in the number of new marriages, there has been a significant increase in divorces. In the first six months of 2024, 15,578 divorces were registered, which is one and a half times more than in the same period last year and 18% more than in the first half of 2021.
Kyiv leads in divorces with 2,118, followed by Dnipropetrovsk Oblast with 1,404 and Kharkiv Oblast with 1,148. Zakarpattia Oblast continues to have the lowest number of divorces at 224, while Chernivtsi Oblast shows the lowest level of new marriages at 1,376 this year.
