Is it possible to force Putin to compromise and establish peace in Ukraine?

According to sources, the administration of US President Joe Biden is quietly but systematically changing its strategy towards Ukraine. According to Politico, these changes are aimed at improving Ukraine's position for possible future negotiations, rather than simply achieving a complete victory over Russia, as in the past.

The reason for this “strategic shift to defense” is the threat of a disruption in Ukraine’s funding, which cannot be provided by either the United States or the European Union. Even though the White House and the Pentagon officially assure that there has been no change in policy, sources indicate that there is discussion of the possibility of reorienting military forces to strengthen the defensive position in eastern Ukraine.

According to Politico, recommendations for Ukraine include upgrading air defense systems, building new defensive structures, installing barbed wire, and digging ditches and anti-tank trenches along its northern border with Belarus.

In addition, the Biden administration is focusing on increasing its own arms production in Ukraine. It is noted that these measures are aimed at strengthening Ukraine's position in possible future negotiations.

Although the US government has not officially announced any changes in policy, experts note that this “strategic shift to defense” could help Ukraine conserve resources and buy time for effective negotiations.

At the same time, the European Union is expressing its readiness to admit Ukraine to NATO under an accelerated procedure, sending signals to Moscow about the possibility of compromise. According to experts, such an approach could influence Vladimir Putin's decision.

In the context of these changes, there is also an emphasis on the fact that Putin may be ready for a ceasefire. Even The New York Times reported that Putin has been hinting at a readiness for a peace agreement since September, proposing to stop fighting in current positions. But experts warn that trust in Putin is problematic, and Ukraine should be careful in negotiating.

At the same time, the US and Ukrainian authorities continue to cooperate, and although there is no new funding at this time, the intention to help Ukraine implement its peace plan is confirmed. In all these circumstances, the main task remains to strengthen defensive positions and prepare for possible negotiations to ensure future peace in the region.
