According to the conclusions of historians, the oldest city of Ukraine is Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi, which became famous for its rich history and cultural monuments.
Founded in ancient Roman times, Bilhorod-Dniester stands on the banks of the Dniester River, preserving its unique architectural and historical heritage. It is believed that the city has existed since pre-Christian times, which makes it one of the oldest settlements on the territory of Ukraine.
As the Ukrainian historian Oleksandr Alfyorov told on his YouTube channel, the history of Bilhorod-Dniester is more than 2,500 years old - it is believed to have been founded by the ancient Greeks back in 498 BC during the colonization of the Black Sea.
"Then it was called Ophiussa, then it changed its name and became called Tira, and in the times of Rus it was called Bilgrad, then it changed its name to Asprokastro, and then there were many more changes. After all, we know it under the name Akkerman, under which it was part of the Ukrainian state in 1918. Now it is called Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi," says the historian.
In 1999, the city celebrated an important anniversary - 2500 years since its foundation. UNESCO recognized the Ukrainian city as one of the oldest in the world.
Today, the city is home to many historical sites, including the archaeological complex of the ancient city of Thira. The so-called Akkerman fortress is also well preserved here - a stone citadel, the construction of which is believed to have started in the 13th century under the Genoese, but it got its modern look during the Ottoman rule over the city.
Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi is a district center in the Odesa region that attracts tourists with its rich history and cultural sights. Among them are ancient fortresses, temples, archaeological finds and other architectural gems that testify to the rich past of this city.
