The office of the President of Ukraine has made a decision on the resignation of Prime Minister Denis Shmigal and the entire composition of the government. This was reported by MP Yaroslav Zheleznyak, citing three independent sources close to power. The main contender for the post of the new Cabinet head is currently being considered the current Viceremier and Minister of Economy Yulia Sviridenko.
Political permutation
According to Zheleznyak, the idea of changing the head of government is "running out in the air" not for the first year-since 2020. However, this was only the rotation of individual ministers. This time, according to the People's Deputy, the final decision was made: Shmigal will be released.
The reason is not only the loss of support in parliament, but also the poor economic policy of the government against the background of martial law. In addition, the authorities need to demonstrate "updates", because it is impossible to hold full elections.
Sviridenko - Schmigal's successor?
The only serious candidate that is currently being considered at the President's office - Yulia Sviridenko. It has been part of the executive branch for many years, heads the economic block and has loyalty to the current administration.
According to the observers, its appointment will allow to maintain the control in the Cabinet of Ministers, formally providing the image of a "new government". In fact, this can only mean cosmetic changes without a deep transformation of politics.
Obstacles are legal but not political
According to the law on the legal regime of martial law, the release of the prime minister is impossible without the resignation of the entire government - which is explicitly forbidden. However, according to Zheleznyak, the authorities are preparing legislative changes that are planned to be approved in June.
An alternative is a traditional Ukrainian option: just bypass the law. The Shmigal is expected to write a voluntary resignation statement, which will allow the procedure of forming a new Cabinet.
Skepticism and realities
Yaroslav Zheleznyak himself skeptically evaluates the prospects for government renewal. In his opinion, even if the prime minister's name changes, it does not guarantee reforms or economic breakthroughs.
"It will be as logical as you believe that Sviridenko is a government upgrade, and now there will be a trillion of GDP," he ironically.
