German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed his hope that a ceasefire agreement in Ukraine could be reached in the coming days. He stated this in a comment to the German edition of Bild.
"I have great hope that the ceasefire agreement will be reached this weekend," Merz said.
According to Chancellor, Russia has announced a three -day truce, and if it is extended for up to 30 days, it will be possible to start negotiations on a peace agreement.
Merz also reported that, together with French President Emmanuel Macron, Prime Minister Kiir Startner and the Chairman of the European Council, Donald Tusk prepared a joint communique, which is "largely identical to the American proposal."
"The ball is now completely on the field of Moscow," the head of the German government emphasized.
In parallel with Merz's statements, President of Finland Alexander Stubb also reported about the approach of the truce. He also believes that the ceasefire should be announced before the weekend.
So far, neither party has officially confirmed the beginning of peace talks, but political rhetoric by Western leaders has indicated some progress in the diplomatic direction.
