Kyiv plans to proactively shut off electricity amid threat of missile strikes

Yasno Serhiy Kovalenko said

Kovalenko explained that the power grid system operates as a serial circuit, and if one of the links fails, it can lead to overload and damage to equipment at substations or power plants.

He also recalled that usually the generation volumes can be adjusted using thermal power plants and CHPs, but in the summer the shelling significantly damaged thermal generation, so other facilities are used for maneuvering.

When asked whether the lights would be turned off every time there was a threat of rocket attacks, Kovalenko replied that such measures would be taken when necessary for the security of the energy system.
