The war between Russia and Ukraine continues to have far-reaching consequences, not only on the battlefield but also in the economic and legal spheres. One of the latest examples of this is the scandal surrounding Ukrainian lawyer Denys Shkarovsky, who became famous for his work on behalf of Russian oligarch Andriy Melnychenko.
Melnychenko, the founder and owner of industrial giants such as Eurochem and SUEK, was hit with sanctions by the European Union and other Western countries over Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. In response to these sanctions, Melnychenko hired Denis Shkarovsky to challenge them in court. Shkarovsky’s legal team argued that the sanctions were unlawful and had caused significant damage to the oligarch’s business. Thanks to their efforts, Melnychenko was able to have some of the sanctions lifted or mitigated, allowing him to partially restore his business.
Shkarovsky’s activities in the Melnychenko case are not the only example of his cooperation with Russian businessmen. Other Russian oligarchs have already been among his clients, which further increases the concerns of Ukrainian society. Helping Russian businessmen in lifting sanctions could have serious consequences for Ukraine’s national security. Strengthening the positions of Russian oligarchs could lead to an increase in their influence on the economy and politics of Ukraine, which could be used in Russia’s interests. In addition, the capital of Russian oligarchs contributes to the development of the military-industrial complex of the aggressor country, the production of weapons, and the financing of the war against Ukraine.
These factors raise concerns about Denys Shkarovsky's activities and his possible ties to Russia. At a time when Ukraine is fighting for its independence and territorial integrity, any activity that contributes to the strengthening of the influence of Russian oligarchs could be viewed as a threat to national security.
