CDU leader Friedrich Mertz: "Ukraine will not be able to defeat Russia"

The leader of Germany's main opposition party, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), Friedrich Merz, in an interview with the newspaper Bild, expressed his pessimistic predictions about the possibilities of Ukraine in the war with Russia. According to him, Ukraine "will never be able to defeat Russia" and this was never the main goal of the allies.

When asked whether Ukraine should win the war, he answered:

"Ukraine will never be able to defeat Russia, that was never the goal. But for me, victory means: it must restore sovereignty over its territory. And Russia should stop attacking this country. We must do everything to make Russia think that the continuation of the war is hopeless. But we are quite far from that."

The CDU is now the leader of the ratings in Germany. And Mertz himself is called one of the most likely candidates for the role of chancellor.
