The popularity of cosmetic injections - botulotoxin, hyaluronic acid, fillers - is growing rapidly. However, the desire to get rid of wrinkles or refresh the face can have extremely serious consequences - up to complete loss of vision.
Vladimir Melnyk, a medical director of the Visiobud Clinic, warns about it. According to him, complications often occur immediately after injection: sharp deterioration of vision, swelling of the eyelids, intense pain in or around it.
One of the most risky injection zones is the intercostal. It is here that under the skin passing the superchinum and hypocritical arteries, which are directly related to the eye artery - the source of blood supply to the retina and optic nerve.
Due to the lack of fatization in this area, the drug may accidentally get into the vessel. Under injection pressure, it moves back - retrograde - into larger vessels. Closing the eye artery leads to an instant diet of the eye and may cause:
-
tissue necrosis;
-
scar formation;
-
blindness (often irreversible).
Similar complications are possible for injection into nasolabial wrinkles. Here is an angular artery that is connected to the dorsal nasal and eye arteries. If the drug enters these vessels, the retina ceases to receive oxygen. In 90 minutes, retinal cells may permanently die.
Even if the vessels in a particular patient have individual characteristics or backup blood supply, it does not guarantee safety. Each injection is a risk, so it should only be performed by a specialist in medical education who knows deeply the anatomy of the face.
Symptoms of complications are both instantaneous and delayed. To ignore even a slight impaired vision or discomfort after the procedure is dangerous. Timely help can save vision.
