Four-year-old Yurko from Brody region got a chance at a healthy life thanks to a team of surgeons from Lviv’s St. Nicholas Children’s Hospital. During a routine ultrasound, the boy accidentally discovered a large tumor in his liver, which took up almost two-thirds of the organ. The tumor did not cause any symptoms, but it could have caused liver failure, which would have required an urgent transplant.
The parents immediately turned to doctors after doctors suspected pathology during an examination in Brody. In Lviv, the boy was taken under the supervision of surgeons, who confirmed his critical condition. The tumor was located in the central part of the liver, leaving only small areas of healthy tissue on both sides. As noted by the pediatric surgeon and medical director of the hospital, Oleksandr Kalinchuk, delay could have led to vascular damage and catastrophic consequences.
The operation was performed urgently. It lasted six hours and required high precision and teamwork. The operating team included experienced surgeons Oleksandr Kalinchuk, Andriy Dvorakevych and Denys Konoplytsky. The tumor was completely removed along with the central part of the liver, after which the healthy parts of the organ were united.
The Cell Saver device played a special role, purifying the blood lost during the operation and returning it back to the body, reducing the need for transfusions. Despite the successful intervention, Yurko's body was exhausted - the child was on a ventilator for 12 days.
The recovery period was long and difficult, but the coordinated work of the team of doctors yielded results. Intensive care physicians, surgeons, and rehabilitation specialists gradually brought the boy back to life.
Today, Yurko is already walking independently, active and smiling. Doctors are confident that he has a full and happy life ahead of him without restrictions.
