French President Emmanuel Macron and EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaia Kallas strongly condemned Russia's missile attack on the city of Sumy on April 13, which resulted in numerous civilian casualties.
In his statement, the French leader called for bolder and more decisive action by the international community to pressure the Kremlin.
"We must act boldly to force Russia to stop its terror against the Ukrainian population," Macron stressed.
Kaia Kallas, for her part, stressed that Russia's attack demonstrates increasing aggression against the backdrop of peace initiatives by Ukraine. In particular, she recalled Kyiv's recent readiness for a ceasefire in the Black Sea.
"While Ukraine agrees to an unconditional ceasefire in the Black Sea, Russia is demonstrating the opposite - it is intensifying attacks," Kallas said.
The explosion that occurred in the center of Sumy on the morning of April 13 was caused by a ballistic missile. According to the latest data, more than 30 people were killed and dozens were injured in the attack. Rescuers continue to work at the scene of the tragedy.
European leaders have repeatedly stressed the need to hold Russia accountable for crimes against civilians. The current strike on Sumy could be a new impetus for tightening sanctions and expanding military support for Ukraine.
