Michael Waltz, Donald Trump's future national security adviser, is actively considering several options for ending the war in Ukraine. As CNN reports, citing its sources, Waltz, who is one of the former US president's closest advisers, is studying possible strategies that could lead to an end to the conflict, but does not plan to compromise on Ukraine's territorial integrity.
The details of the strategy are still being worked out, but Trump is likely to push for an early ceasefire to “temporarily freeze the conflict” while the two sides negotiate. Trump wants Europe and NATO to play a greater role in supporting Ukraine.
Among the options considered is the proposal of General Keith Kellogg, whom Trump announced as his candidate for the position of special envoy to Ukraine.
The Kellogg Plan provides for continued military aid to Ukraine on the condition that it participate in peace negotiations with Russia and for it to be denied NATO membership for a long period in order to bring Russia to the negotiating table.
Richard Grenell's plan is also being considered - the creation of "autonomous regions" in Ukraine, although he did not explain in detail what this would look like.
Another idea is to allow Russia to keep the captured territories in exchange for Ukraine's membership in NATO, although sources say that this idea is not liked by many in Trump's entourage.
Waltz also discussed the Ukraine issue with Biden's national security adviser Sullivan last week.
