Michael Waltz, Donald Trump's future national security adviser, is actively considering several options for ending the war in Ukraine. As CNN reports with reference to its sources, Waltz, who is one of the closest advisers of the former US president, is studying possible strategies that could lead to the end of the conflict, but he does not plan to compromise on the territorial integrity of Ukraine.
The details of the strategy are still being worked out, but Trump is likely to push for an early ceasefire to "temporarily freeze the conflict" while the two sides negotiate. Trump wants more participation from Europe and NATO in supporting Ukraine.
Among the considered options is the proposal of General Keith Kellogg, whom Trump announced as his candidate for the post of special envoy to Ukraine.
Kellogg's plan involves continuing military aid to Ukraine on the condition that it participates in peace talks with Russia and denying it NATO membership for an extended period in order to bring Russia to the negotiating table.
Richard Grenell's plan to create "autonomous regions" in Ukraine is also under consideration, although he did not elaborate on what that would look like.
Another idea is to allow Russia to keep the captured territories in exchange for Ukraine's membership in NATO, although sources say that idea is not liked by many in Trump's circle.
Waltz also discussed the issue of Ukraine with Biden's national security adviser Sullivan last week.
