The Ukrainian military, who steadfastly defended Mariupol and left "Azovstal" in accordance with the order, have been in captivity for two years. On the night of July 28-29, 2022, Russia committed a mass murder in Olenivka, blowing up the barracks where the Azov residents had previously been transferred. The tragedy led to the death of more than 50 soldiers.
Approximately 700 Azov fighters remain in Russian captivity. Return contact with them is complicated by the inability to find out about their condition through international organizations, in particular the Red Cross.
The Ukrainian authorities maintain contact with the families of the prisoners, but the efforts are mainly aimed at supporting ideas and projects, and not at obtaining specific information about their well-being in captivity.
The investigation of the terrorist attack in Olenivka remains confidential, information about it is limited. The Ukrainian investigation is ongoing, but the international investigation does not seem to have started. Preparations for submitting the case to the International Criminal Court continue, but this process is time-consuming and difficult.
The public organization "Community of Olenivka Families" initiates support actions for prisoners in 11 countries of the world. Their actions mark the memory of those killed in Olenivka and support all Ukrainian prisoners.
Creative and cultural projects are also used to support prisoners. "Creative Sich" cooperates with NGOs, developing materials and works to honor the memory of the tragedy and support the prisoners.
Participating in public events, supporting initiatives, and spreading the word about the plight of POWs are ways that everyone can help families and soldiers in captivity.
