Massive attack on Konotop: many victims, critical situation with power supply

On the night of September 12, 2024, the Russian army carried out a massive attack on Konotop in the Sumy region, causing significant destruction and casualties among the civilian population. As a result of this attack, the city suffered severe damage, and the lighting situation is critical. The police of the Sumy region published a photo of the consequences of the shelling, which shows the extent of the destruction.

There is destruction in the city center, there are problems with water, the situation with light is critical - the energy infrastructure has suffered significant damage, Mayor Artem Semenikhin said.

The Sumy OVA indicated that as of this morning, the total number of victims has reached 13 people. They have injuries of varying severity. Two men were taken to the hospital, one of whom is in a coma.

"The enemy carried out a massive airstrike on energy and civil infrastructure facilities of the Konotop community. The Russians used Shahed UAVs, directing them, among other things, to residential buildings, educational and medical institutions," the administration said.

Artem Semenikhin added that the tram track was destroyed, so on September 12, the movement of trams will be restricted.

The energy infrastructure suffered significant damage, the situation with electricity and water in the city is currently critical.

"Energy workers at this moment are doing everything - even more than possible - to give light to the hospital and the water supply. When electricity will appear in residents' houses at least hourly - no one can predict," the mayor said.

Water will be supplied to the citizens hourly.

According to Semenikhin, the Russians damaged a large number of educational institutions, the final data are still being clarified. Many windows and doors were broken. Kindergartens will work in the mode of regular groups.

Hospitals were also damaged. There, windows were broken in a large number of buildings, but the equipment is not seriously damaged, doctors are working.

"All surgeons in the city are at work. Appeals from victims continue to arrive. Currently, two men are hospitalized. One of them is in a very critical condition (coma). By the way, the one who is in a coma was on his way to save people," added the mayor.

Utilities and emergency services are working in the affected cities to eliminate the consequences of the impact.

Sumyshchyna has been subjected to systematic Russian shelling since the beginning of the full-scale war. On September 9, they announced mandatory evacuation in some settlements.
