On the night of April 24, Russian forces launched a large-scale combined strike on Kyiv, using several types of weapons at once: Kalibr cruise missiles, Shahed suicide drones, and ballistic missiles. The attack caused extensive destruction in residential areas of the capital, fires, and civilian casualties.
The first explosions occurred shortly after midnight. At around 02:00, the Kyiv City Military Administration reported large-scale fires in several areas of the city, including residential and non-residential buildings. Cars, garages, and dry grass were also on fire.
As of 04:00, Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko reported at least two dead and 54 injured, including six children. Already in the morning, at 06:00, the State Emergency Service updated this data: the number of dead increased to nine people, injured to 63. Rescuers noted that children remain among the injured.
"Fires broke out in garages, administrative buildings, and non-residential facilities. Cars and grass were burning due to falling debris. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire," the State Emergency Service reported.
Emergency services are still working at the sites of the shelling, and search and rescue operations are ongoing, including under the rubble of destroyed buildings. Footage of the aftermath of the night shelling has appeared on social media and in the media: damaged houses, burning cars, broken windows, smoke, and destroyed facades.
This is the second large-scale attack on Ukrainian cities in recent days. Explosions were also heard in other regions of Ukraine, indicating that the level of threat from the air remains high.
Once again, Kyiv and its residents were struck at night, when most civilians were at home. This is a reminder that the war continues and there are still no safe places.
