On the night of September 12, 2024, the Russian army carried out a massive strike on Konotop, in Sumy Oblast, causing significant destruction and civilian casualties. As a result of this attack, the city suffered severe damage, and the electricity situation is critical. The Sumy Oblast Police published photos of the aftermath of the shelling, which show the extent of the destruction.
There is destruction in the city center, there are problems with water, the situation with electricity is critical - the energy infrastructure has suffered significant damage, said Mayor Artem Semenikhin.
The Sumy Regional Emergency Management Office indicated that as of this morning, the total number of injured people had reached 13. They have injuries of varying severity. Two men were taken to the hospital, one of whom is in a coma.
"The enemy carried out a massive air strike on energy and civil infrastructure facilities of the Konotop community. The Russians used Shahed UAVs, targeting them, among other things, residential buildings, educational and medical institutions," the administration said.
Artem Semenikhin added that the tram track was destroyed, so tram traffic will be restricted on September 12.
The energy infrastructure suffered significant damage, and the situation with electricity and water in the city is currently critical.
"At this moment, energy workers are doing everything - even more than possible - to provide light to the hospital and the water utility. No one will undertake to predict when electricity will appear in the homes of residents, even for an hour," the mayor noted.
Water will be supplied to residents hourly.
According to Semenikhin, the Russians damaged a large number of educational institutions, the final data is still being clarified. Many windows and doors were broken. Kindergartens will operate in the mode of duty groups.
Hospitals were also damaged. Windows were broken in a large number of buildings, but the equipment was not seriously damaged, and doctors are working.
“All the city’s surgeons are at work. Appeals from the injured continue to come in. Two men are currently hospitalized. One of them is in a very critical condition (coma). By the way, the one in a coma was just on his way to save people,” the mayor added.
Utility and emergency services are working in the affected cities to deal with the aftermath of the impact.
The Sumy region has been under systematic Russian shelling since the beginning of the full-scale war. On September 9, mandatory evacuations were announced in some settlements.
