On May 29, Orthodox Christians celebrate the Ascension of the Lord

Today is a special day for believers, as Orthodox Christians celebrate the Ascension of the Lord, one of the most important holidays in the church calendar. It was on this day, according to the Gospel, that Jesus Christ ascended to heaven after forty days on earth after the Resurrection.

Also on May 29, Saint Theodore the Sanctified is honored - an ascetic and miracle worker known for his unwavering faith.

Folk traditions and signs

Ascension Day was always special among the people. Peasants would finish sowing rye and barley, go to church, and bless water. They would sprinkle it on livestock, apiaries, and gardens for a good harvest. Beekeepers considered this day auspicious for working near their hives.

  • to start important things,

  • to quarrel or do needlework - because "your hands will hurt.".

Weather signs:

  • bright sun - June will be warm,

  • a spider web between the trees - it will soon get warmer,

  • a rainbow after the rain - to dry days,

  • The mountain ash has bloomed - wait for the heat.
