May is traditionally considered a month of holidays, which Ukrainians celebrate with warmth, attention to traditions and important dates. This year, the calendar of the last month of spring is also rich in professional, international and memorable events, which will make this period especially eventful.
May opens with International Labor Day (May 1), dedicated to the memory of labor protests in Chicago that took place back in 1886. A little later, on May 3, Ukrainians will celebrate several dates at once: World Press Freedom Day, a professional holiday for confectioners, and the birthday of the city of Lviv.
May 8 and 9 will be especially important for Ukrainian society this year: the Days of Remembrance and Reconciliation, as well as Europe Day, which Ukraine will celebrate on May 9 from 2023, emphasizing the European choice and solidarity.
May 11 is a special date for Ukrainian families: Mother's Day. This holiday is traditionally celebrated on the second Sunday of May, when Ukrainians greet their mothers with warm words and gifts.
Another favorite date is Vyshyvanka Day, which falls on May 15. On this day, Ukrainians wear national clothes, demonstrating unity, love for traditions, and culture.
In mid-May, Ukrainians also remember the tragic pages of history: May 18 is the Day of Struggle for the Rights of the Crimean Tatar People and the Day of Remembrance of Victims of Political Repression, dedicated to the deportation of Crimean Tatars and repressions by the Soviet authorities.
Professional holidays will not be overlooked: bankers will celebrate their day on May 20, marines and patriotic forces - Heroes' Day and Ukrainian Marine Corps Day on May 23. Kyiv residents will traditionally celebrate City Day on the last weekend of May, this year - May 25.
Due to martial law, there will be no additional weekends in May 2025, so Ukrainians will rest only on the usual Saturdays and Sundays. However, this will not prevent them from celebrating important holidays with family or friends.
