The US Embassy in Kyiv has issued an important warning to men with dual citizenship: in Ukraine, they may be mobilized into the Armed Forces and not allowed to travel abroad.
This message caused a significant resonance and attracted the attention of US citizens who also have Ukrainian citizenship.
“As of June 1, Ukraine has abolished the ‘residence abroad’ exception, which previously allowed some Ukrainian men between the ages of 18 and 60 to leave the country. Following this change, dual U.S.-Ukrainian citizens, including those residing in the United States, will no longer be able to leave the country,” the embassy said in a statement.
"Previously, dual citizens of the US and Ukraine from this group could enter Ukraine and then leave it if they deregistered their place of residence in Ukraine and registered their place of residence in the US. According to our information, this exception was canceled as of June 1," the embassy explains.
It states that it is “limited in its ability to influence Ukrainian legislation, including the application of martial law and the law on mobilization to Ukrainian citizens.”.
“If you are in Ukraine and cannot leave the country, shelter in place and obey all local orders. If you are not currently in Ukraine, we strongly recommend that male U.S. citizens aged 18 to 60 who also hold Ukrainian citizenship refrain from any travel to Ukraine,” the statement said.
