A serious confrontation is brewing in Kyiv between the mayor of the capital, Vitali Klitschko, and the newly appointed head of the Kyiv City Military Administration (KMMA), Timur Tkachenko. The latter was appointed by President Volodymyr Zelensky on New Year's Eve, which seems to have caused the mayor's displeasure.
Klitschko directly accuses the president's entourage of "political intrigues" and claims that Tkachenko, who has no military education or experience, is "blocking the resolution of key economic issues." According to the mayor, the restoration of damaged houses, compensation for affected residents, and city infrastructure are all under threat.
In addition, Klitschko claims that Tkachenko is trying to usurp power by taking over the powers of the mayor, city council, and Kyiv City State Administration, which, in his opinion, is illegal.
“I remind you that the military administration is a temporary body that deals with defense and security, not usurpation of power,” Klitschko emphasized.
The conflict between the mayor of Kyiv and a representative of the presidential vertical in the capital threatens to escalate into an open struggle for influence. In the conditions of martial law and a crisis in relations between the city authorities and the military administration, the situation in Kyiv can only worsen.
