German Minister Boris Pistorius stated that the likelihood of transmitting the Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine remains in question. He reported this during the Social Democratic Party conference in Hanover, Tagesschau .
According to the minister, although there are "significant arguments" in favor of the transfer of these long -range missiles, there are also no less convincing arguments against. In doing so, some of them cannot be discussed publicly.
“Indeed, some reasons for the support of missiles are clear. But there are also many aspects that make you doubt the feasibility of this step. And not all these arguments can be the subject of open discussion, ”Pistorius said.
The calls of Taurus missiles have increased again. Thus, the leader of the Christian Democratic Union and the probable future Chancellor Friedrich Merz recently stated that Germany should provide these missiles, but solely in coordination with European partners.
“This decision must be agreed. And if partners support the transfer, Germany should participate in this, ”Merz emphasized.
However, Pistorius was skeptical of this statement, noting that he does not know any European country that has Taurus in service, so the issue of coordination remains unclear.
In addition, the Secretary General of the SPD Mattias Mirsh on the same day expressed the opinion that Merz would eventually abandon the idea of sending Taurus to Ukraine.
Taurus missiles allow you to hit targets at a long distance - up to 500 km - and is one of the most modern weapons of this type in Germany. Ukraine has repeatedly urged Berlin to provide these missiles to strengthen the defense and damage the critical military goals of the Russian Federation.
However, the German government has long avoided the final decision, explaining it both political and technical reasons.
