Ukraine is recording cases of metapneumovirus, a virus that causes symptoms similar to a common respiratory illness. The lack of a vaccine and specific medications against it is causing concern among citizens. However, doctors are reassuring: this infection is not new and usually occurs in a mild form.
An old familiar virus
As explained by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Serhiy Kramarev, metapneumovirus has accompanied humanity throughout its history. “This virus is present every year. There is nothing supernatural about it,” he notes. Last season alone, 13 cases of metapneumovirus were recorded in Ukraine.
The virus poses a danger to people in the risk group - children under two years old, people over 65 years old, and patients with chronic diseases.
The danger is lower than the flu
Compared to influenza, metapneumovirus is less aggressive and does not cause pandemics. The lack of a vaccine is explained precisely by its low risk. As Kramarev emphasizes, the costs of developing a vaccine would exceed the costs of treating patients.
The virus causes common cold symptoms: cough, runny nose, fever. Only in cases of severe illness or health risks should you seek medical attention.
Prevention: familiar rules
Protection against metapneumovirus comes down to standard measures:
- Wash your hands and avoid crowds.
- Use masks if necessary, especially in at-risk groups.
Although masks do not guarantee complete protection, they can reduce the risk of infection by 1.5-2 times.
Should we panic?
According to the expert, concerns about metapneumovirus are overstated. “We have this infection every year, and it is not particularly dangerous, unless it concerns people from the risk group,” Kramarev concluded.
Metapneumovirus is not a new or unusual phenomenon. Following basic preventive measures and paying attention to your health will help you avoid the risks associated with this virus.
