Protein bars have long become a popular variant of a quick snack for athletes, fitness enthusiasts and anyone who is trying to adhere to a healthy lifestyle. However, new studies question their effectiveness and even safety.
According to Ladbible, the analysis of more than 1600 samples of protein products has shown disappointing results: the body absorbs only 47% of the protein indicated on the package. The reason is the low quality protein components, including collagen, which has low biological value, as well as the presence of components that impair the absorption of nutrients.
In addition to doubtful benefit, many protein bars contain:
-
artificial flavors, dyes and flavor enhancers,
-
hydrogenated fats and isolated proteins,
-
Sugar substitutes that can cause swelling and disruption of the gastrointestinal tract,
-
High content of salt and hidden sugar.
According to British scientists, regular consumption of ultra-treated products, which also include such bars, increases the risk of obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and bowel cancer.
Nutritionists emphasize that protein bars should not be a replacement for a full meal. Instead, you should focus on natural sources of protein - meat, eggs, fish, legumes and dairy products. And to use bars only as a rare snack in exceptional cases, when there is no access to normal food.
