Ukraine plans to start construction of four new nuclear reactors at the Khmelnytskyi nuclear power plant this summer or fall. This initiative is aimed at compensating energy capacities lost due to the temporary occupation of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.
It is noted that two of these reactors will be based on Russian- made , which Ukraine plans to import from Bulgaria, while the other two will use Western technologies from the power equipment manufacturer Westinghouse. All four reactors will be built at the Khmelnytskyi nuclear power plant.
Construction of the third and fourth reactors of the Khmelnytskyi nuclear power plant began in the 1980s, but was subsequently frozen. Since gaining independence, Ukraine has built three new nuclear reactors — one each at the Zaporizhzhia, Khmelnytskyi, and Rivne nuclear power plants.
Today, three nuclear power plants on the territory of Ukraine provide more than 55% of the country's electricity needs. However, Kyiv intends to expand this sector to compensate for the temporary loss of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, the largest in Europe.
In December, the National Nuclear Power Generating Company "Energoatom" and Westinghouse signed an agreement on the purchase of equipment for the fifth power unit of the Khmelnytsky Nuclear Power Plant.
