The Ministry of Education recommends a new system for evaluating students in schools

The Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine (MES) has presented new recommendations for evaluating the learning outcomes of students in grades 5-9. The changes concern not only the evaluation system, but also the introduction of new documents that will reflect the achievements of students.

It is noted that, if necessary, schools can make changes to it so that it best meets the educational program of the educational institution and the needs of students. The certificate of achievement consists of two parts:

  1. Characteristics of educational activity. Here, teachers assess the level of formation of cross-cutting skills in the student at the end of the school year. It is about understanding what is read, expressing one's own opinion, critical and systematic thinking, initiative, etc. There are no ratings in this section. The teacher only determines one of the levels of formation of this or that skill: "Has significant success", "Demonstrates noticeable progress", "Requires attention and help". Teachers can fill out this part of the certificate collegially or it can be done by the class teacher.
  2. Characteristics of learning outcomes. In this section, points are given for academic subjects / integrated courses per semester and per year. First, the teacher assigns a score for separate groups of learning outcomes, which are defined in the State Standard of Basic Education. After that, it displays the overall grade for the semester. For each of these groups of learning outcomes, the teacher assigns a grade. The overall grade for the semester is formed on the basis of four grades by groups of results, and the annual grade is formed on the basis of semester grades.

"In view of the different educational needs of students and the deepening of educational losses and gaps, we recommend that teachers flexibly evaluate the results of student learning. Approaches to assessment in different classes of a general secondary education institution may have differences, aimed at the implementation of the educational program of the educational institution and the autonomy of the teacher", - according to the Ministry of Education and Culture.
