The Ministry of Justice of Ukraine has dismissed Oleksiy Berezhny, the general director of the state-owned enterprise National Information Systems (NAIS). The decision was made after a large-scale hacker attack that hit state registers.
The Russian cyberattack, which became a catalyst for changes in the leadership of the National Intelligence Service, dealt a serious blow to key state registries. Since the incident, law enforcement agencies have opened a criminal case, which is still under investigation. In addition, an internal investigation has been initiated into the circumstances of the attack and the operation of the National Intelligence Service's cyber defense system.
For the first time in the company's history, a comprehensive audit was also conducted, which revealed weaknesses in the security system. Although the results of the audit have not been officially made public, Berezhny's dismissal indicates the seriousness of the violations or shortcomings in the work.
The Ministry of Justice emphasized that the incident was an important lesson for the entire system of state register management. In particular, the department has begun implementing systemic changes to strengthen cyber protection.
The main areas of reform were:
- Expanding cybersecurity : strengthening monitoring and implementing new protection tools.
- Liability for incidents : new rules on personal liability of company managers.
- Technical system upgrade : the audit identified outdated equipment and software that require modernization.
It is not yet known who will succeed Oleksiy Berezhny. However, given the context, it is likely that experience in the field of information security will be a key criterion for the new leader.
This situation also highlighted the importance of a cyber defense strategy for the state, especially in the face of constant aggression from Russia.
