Ukraine has introduced new requirements for mobile operators, requiring them to provide communication during power outages for 10 hours instead of the previous 4. These changes, announced by the State Commission for Special Communications, are part of efforts to ensure communication stability in critical situations.
According to the new regulations, by October 1, 2024, at least 60% of operators' base stations must be equipped with autonomous backup power. These requirements will gradually increase: by November 1 - 70%, by December 1 - 80%, and by the end of January 2025 - 100%.
By December 1, 2023, at least 25% of base stations in each region must be connected to generators that can operate without electricity for 72 hours. And from September 1, all facilities must be equipped with this capability. This means that mobile operators are obliged to guarantee stable access to the Internet and communication even during long power outages.
These measures are critical to maintaining communications capabilities in Ukraine, especially in times of war and energy crises. Ensuring communications in critical situations can save lives, so the new requirements are designed to increase the level of preparedness of operators for extreme conditions.
